Self Defense Products have been around and talked about for a very long time.  I personally cannot vouch for this, but I would venture to say it is a very good bet that a stick was used to give a good thrashing to another cave man.  Can’t you just see the Neanderthals comparing clubs?  I can just hear them saying, “My club is bigger than your club.”  It’s like trying to keep up with the Jones’s.  I would like to think that I don’t get caught up in that phenom, but I’m not sure my wife would agree.  She keeps talking about “boys and their toys”.  Maybe she has a point.  Please don’t tell her I said that!  I’d like to think that we have progressed over the years in the technology we use to create our self defense products.

Self defense products have indeed advanced quite a bit since the first stick was used to fend off an attacker or an animal. I prefer the options available to us today over the primitive weapons of the past. 

Let’s talk about one of the most effective self defense products on the market today -  the TASER C2®. The name TASER is named after a fictional weapon - Thomas A. Swift's Electric Rifle.  Development of the TASER started in 1969 but was not completed until 1974.  At this point the TASER was only authorized for the Military and Law Enforcement.  In 1994 the TASER became available for civilian use. In 2007 the TASER C2 was launched by Taser International.

The TASER C2 is a self-defense electronic control device.  Electronic Control Devices (ECDs) use propelled wires to conduct energy to affect the sensory and motor functions of the nervous system.  In addition, it can be used as a direct contact stun device.  The TASER C2 uses a replaceable cartridge, containing compressed nitrogen, to deploy two small probes that are attached to the TASER C2 by insulated conductive wires with a maximum length of 15 feet (4.5 meters).  The energy can penetrate up to two cumulative inches of clothing or one inch per probe.

This product is very popular among the civilian population, and I like to call it the “Personal Protector”.  They come in a variety of colors, ranging from your basic black to metallic pink.  The craze with the Personal Protector mimics the days of your mother who was fascinated with Tupperware.  Like Tupperware parties, Taser parties are now being held all over the country.  Now let’s say you are at one of these parties.  You have just learned more about why this item is an effective self defense product, and you decide to buy one for yourself and your wife (or your partner).  You take it home, get your background check completed, get your activation code to get your taser working, and you now have a self defense product ready to save your life.

Now what do you do?  If you truly want to use the “Personal Protector” for self defense, you must practice to become familiar with the unit.  You need to know how it feels when the cartridge is fired.  You must be comfortable knowing you can do it if the need ever arises.

You are going out to dinner with your better-half when all of a sudden you notice a suspicious man heading your way.  It appears he has something in his hand.  What do you do?  Fortunately, you remembered to put your taser in its holster and put it on your belt.  As this person is walking towards you, you remove the TASER C2 and are holding it in your hand with your thumb on the plastic thumb slide.  If he attempts anything, you will be ready to do what you have to do to protect you and your better-half.  If he continues on without incident, you put your TASER C2 back in the holster, take a deep breath and enjoy your dinner.
